LG's square-shaped robotic vacuums to entertain at CES 2013

LG Electronics will showcase its newest square robotic vacuum cleaner in a most creative fashion at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) from January 8-11 in Las Vegas.

A highly trained troupe of HOM-BOT SQUARE units will demonstrate their incredible brushes that have been lengthened by 1.5cm, the HOM-BOT SQUARE can remove dust and dirt from the tightest of corners. The Corner Detecting Sensors enable the smart cleaner to pinpoint its exact location in the home, telling it when to turn or if it has reached the edge of a room.

Robotic cleaners typically have only one camera. The advanced HOM-BOT SQUARE uses two improved Dual Eye 2.0 cameras to plot outa smarter, faster and more efficient cleaning route. Taking several images per second, the upper and lower cameras effectively scan ceilings, walls and floors, even in the dark. This information is then analyzed by HOM-BOT SQUARE to generate smarter mapping. At the same time, multiple sensors detect all obstacles within a 180 degree field, taking a myriad of surface images for collision-free operation. The HOM-BOT SQUARE also features a Learning Function which enables it to recognize areas it has previously cleaned. This helps it to remember the positioning of objects or to sense when an area is already clean, minimizing unnecessary repetition.

Low noise level of just 60dBA means the HOM-BOT SQUARE can clean when you're watching TV, talking on the phone or reading. With a height of just 89mm, the unit's slimmed-down profile enables it to maneuver around the home with ease, even under most furniture.

The LG HOM-BOT SQUARE makes cleaning more convenient because it requires less frequent emptying thanks to the larger capacity Easy-out Dust Bin. Unlike other robotic vacuum cleaners where the dust bin is located on the side, the Easy-out Dust Bin is positioned at the top of the cleaner for quickand hygienic removal. The larger and upgraded HEPA 11 filter also enables it to separate dust particles from the air more thoroughly, while also helping eliminate unpleasant odors. Turbo Mode lets users manually adjust the cleaner to best match the characteristics of their flooring and Smart Turbo Mode automatically detects the type of flooring and changes its own settings for best performance.

Users will further enjoy a host of convenient features such as Voice Guidance, which includes over 90 voice alerts as well as Smart Diagnosis that troubleshoots problems more easily. Additionally, the improved battery holds more charge, meaning owners of the LG HOM-BOT SQUARE can enjoy extended periods of worry-free automated cleaning.

Dell Latitude E6410 and E6510 laptops finally appear

Design-wise, both the Dell Latitude E6410 and Latitude E6510 are closely similar to the older E6400 and E6500. Most of the changes are under the bottom cover.

A quick run through of the available specifications: You have three processor options for the Latitude E6410, namely the Core i5-520M, Core i5-540M, and the Core i7-620M, all of which are dual-core processors. As for the Latitude E6510, you have both dual-core and quad-core options, namely the Core i5-540M, Core i7-620M, Core i7-720QM, and Core i7-820QM, where the latter two are quads. The laptops' chipset, for those who are interested, is the Intel QM57 Express. Memory used in the both new machines are DDR3 sticks of either 1066MHz or 1333MHz.

On the E6410, the display retains the conventional 16:10 ratio widescreen. Resolutionoptions are similar to that of the E6400 -1280x800 and 1440x900. However, the E6510 switches to a 16:9 ratio 15.6" widescreen. Three resolutions are available, a typical 1366x768 one, a HD+ 1600x900, and even a Full HD 1920x1080 panel. All panels on both panels are anti-glare (say no to glossy!), have LED backlighting. Display is driven either by the integrated graphics on the processor, or a discrete NVIDIA NVS 3100M 512MB solution.

Storage options include solid state drives of up to 256GB, while mechanical 7200rpmhard drive options are availableup to 500GB.

The other components such as Gigabit Ethernet, Wireless-N, Bluetooth, card reader, fingerprint reader, smartcard reader... are standard as they were on the E6x00 models. A check on Dell's main website does not reveal model numbers, other than the Bluetooth module being a newer one - Dell Wireless 375 Bluetooth. Let us go digging around Dell's Support site and we'll get back to you with the minute details later.

Recall the long-life batteries that have been discussed in recent times? Dell's offering them as a '3 year life-time 9-cell Li-Ion battery'. As for standard batteries, you have 4-cell, 6-cell, and 9-cell options, complete with a 12-cell battery slice option as well.

Perhaps some of you might have just scrolled through this piece of news. So here, we're giving you the direct links to the Dell Latitude E6410 and E6510 product pages:

Exclusive Intel's first LGA 2011 motherboards unveiled

Today we can as the first publication in the world unveil the codenames of Intels first two own brand LGA 2011 motherboards which are expected to launch in the second half of this year with support for Intels upcoming high-end consumer desktop platform.

Sadly we dont actually have a lot of details beyond the Intel code names for the two boards at this moment, but well be following up with more platform details as we get them. Intels first two models are currently known as "Siler" and "Thorsby" and as you can see from the roadmap slide below, both models are expected sometime in the second half of this year.

The roadmap is about two months old by now, but the information should be correct. As this is the platform that will replace the current LGA 1366 motherboards and Nehalem based processors, it will initially be exclusive for Intels Extreme Edition CPUs. This is likely to disappoint a lot of consumers that so far have been hoping for an upgrade solution for their LGA 1366 systems, but it seems like that is less likely now, unless you have US$999 (or more) to blow on a CPU.

What we do know is that the new boards will use quad channel memory and were expecting one DIMM per channel on most if not all consumer motherboards. The CPUs for the LGA 2011 platform that targets consumers are currently known as Sandy Bridge-E, a CPU which will also appear as high-end Xeon processors. This will be Intels first PCI Express 3.0 platform as well, but dont expect to see boards with more than two full x16 PCI Express slots, just like the current LGA 1366 boards, although it would be possible to do boards with up to five slots with eight lanes worth of PCI Express 3.0 bandwidth per slot.

Wed expect to see the first boards from Intels partners on display at Computex 2011 which starts on the 31st of May this year. However, the platform isnt really expected to launch until a few months later, maybe during IDF San Francisco in September. Some of this will most likely depend on how well AMDs upcoming Bulldozer platform performs in comparison to Intels current LGA 1155 Sandy Bridge platform and if AMD performs better than Intel is expecting, we might see the Sandy Bridge-E platform pulled forward.

Asus set to revamp its router line-up

With the mostly disappointing AMD news today, we figured wed post some more positive news, well, that is if you care at all about routers. Asus is getting ready to revamp its entire router product range and it seems like the company got really fond of its "Black Diamond" series design as were looking at no less than five new models based on the same overall design. The best news of it all is that Asus is finally ready to launch the RT-N66U dual band router, but the design has changed quite a bit since it was first shown way back at CES in January.

Asus first router in the Black Diamond series was the RT-N56U, although it has very recently been joined by the RT-N53 which is Asus second dual band router, although its a much more basic model with only 2x2 MIMO, no simultaneous dual band and no USB connectivity, although its about half the price of the RT-N56U and it keeps the Gigabit switch.

Starting at the bottom of the new models we have the RT-N10 LX which is a basic 802.11n single antenna 150Mbps router with a standard 10/100Mbps switch and a mere 4MB of flash and 16MB of RAM. Moving up a step we have the RT-N12 LX which gains 2x2 MIMO support which offers 300Mbps connectivity speeds, but is otherwise near identical in terms of functionality to the RT-N10 LX. Both of these models sit flat and have fixed external antennas unlike the other Black Diamond series routers.

Next up we have the RT-N15U and this model has a pair of PCB antennas and support for 300Mbps MIMO connectivity. It also has a Gigabit switch, a Gigabit WAN port and a single USB port (although some specs weve seen is suggesting it might have two) that supports storage devices and printers. It also sports a built in FTP server and supports UPnP AV. The RT-N15U will likely replace the current RT-N16 over time.

Finally the top of the line model is the highly anticipated RT-N66U which initially was thought to be an Asus R.O.G. branded router, but now thats expected to be the rumoured RT-N76U. The RT-N66U is a simultaneous dual band router with Gigabit speed for the WAN and LAN ports, three detachable antennas that are used for both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands and Wi-Fi speeds of up to 450Mbps on both bands. It also sports two USB 2.0 ports which can be used with storage devices and printers. The router sports a new UI which we sadly dont have a high enough resolution picture of to post, but the general layout and design is similar to that of Asus UEFI. Theres of course support for FTP server, UPnP AV and various other features. The RT-N66U should be based on a 600MHz SoC paired up with 32MB of Flash and 1GB of DDR2 memory if initial specs prove to be correct.

In addition to the new routers, Asus is also launching the USB-N53, a dual band USB dongle with 2x2 MIMO antennas for speeds of up to 300Mbps and its been designed to go with the Black Diamond series of routers. Asus has started to make some pretty impressive network kit and our only reservation about Asus Wi-Fi products is the comparatively high price of some of its products, such as the RT-N56U which is still one of the more expensive consumer routers out there. Sadly we dont know what the new models will cost, but were expecting that the RT-N66U will be even pricier than the RT-N56U.

Update: Do note that the specs of the RT-N66U were based on what was said back in January when the unit was demoed at CES, its likely that itll come with 256MB of RAM, but we dont know the actual specifications, so well just have to wait and see when it launches.

Apple gives employees additional discounts on Macs and iPads

Apple employees can now purchase Macs and iPads with a 25% discount on top of their current 25% employee discount.

Tim Cook promised a new Mac and iPad discount in January for employees, and he kept his promise. Excluding Mac minis and MacBooks with Retina, employees are able to purchase Macs at up to $500 discounts, and iPads at up to $250 discounts.

However, employees must meet several requirements to take advantage of the discounts. An employee has to be with the company for at least three months, and the discount can only be taken advantage of every three years.

More good news for Apple employees as they many have or will get a pay raise. The average reported raises are between $2 and $4. This may make us wonder if Foxconn’s employees will reap any benefits from Apple’s goodwill.

Asus' P8Z77-V Premium gets teased on video

Apparently Asus is planning on launching an even more feature packed and expensive P8Z77-V motherboard model above the Deluxe that should be known as the Premium. In a video by Anandtech the motherboard is shown for about half of the 40 minute long video, yet never really spoken about in any detail.

The P8Z77-V Premium is hiding in the right hand side corner of the video which weve embedded at the bottom of this page and it has at least three features that the other P8Z77-V models lack. The first and most obvious feature change is that the board sports four x16 PCI Express slots – as well as two x1 PCI Express slots and no PCI slots – which suggests that itll be able to do quad SLI/CrossFireX. The slot layout is identical to the P8Z77 WS, but its pretty clear that this isnt the same motherboard.

Moving on, if you look at the front edge of the board by the SATA ports, youll notice an mSATA SSD and as far as were aware, this is the first Z77 model from Asus with an mSATA slot. Theres also a ninth SATA port on the board, but this isnt really one of the major new features, just something we spotted in passing.

What took us a little what to spot was the tiny little port just below Asus Wi-Fi Go card and if you look carefully this should be a mini DisplayPort/Thunderbolt port. We cant say for sure that this is the case, but the small square object is the right size and with the S/PDIF out located next to it and the clear CMOS button between the two Ethernet ports, its the only thing we can think of that it could be.

The rear I/O should otherwise be similar to the P8Z77-V Deluxe, albeit without the eSATA/USB 3.0 stack of connectors. That also means that this would be one of the first motherboards to support triple display output, as it should also have a full-size DisplayPort and an HDMI port. What is mentioned in the video is that this model, alongside with the Maximum V Formula will arrive sometime in the near feature for a price point in excess of US$300 (S$375).

Andino Denim Texas iPad 2 Leather Case and PowerPlus II Lite now available in Singapore

When one pays good money to purchase devices that are designed specially to appeal to the fashion-conscious, it goes without saying that such devices could always use some form of protection in the form of third-party cases and bumpers. After all, with luxury products like Apples iPhone 4 and iPad 2 tablet devices costing a lot more than most of the competition, users will definitely want to ensure that their drool-worthy, Steve Jobs-approved fashion statements remain well protected from the likes of nicks and scratches.

And if you are going to invest in protection for your iPhone and iPad 2, why not spend a little more and get some protective gear that not only shows off your individuality, but comes with some added functionality at the same time? Which, coincidentally, happens to be what Andino is offering to owners of iOS-powered devices with its Andino Denim Texas iPad 2Leather Case and PowerPlus II Lite battery pack for the iPhone 4.

Andino Denim Texas iPad 2 Leather Case

According to Andino, the Denim Texas iPad 2 Leather Case is a protective case which has been designed to cater to the fashion-conscious and utilizes high-quality denim for its exterior. In addition, the Denim Texas iPad 2 Leather Case also has a built-in "inner spine" which enables the case to cater for both landscape and portrait viewing (as shown below).

PowerPlus II Lite battery pack

According to Andino, the PowerPlus II Lite mobile battery pack is "an enhanced-capacity battery case" which is said to be capable of doubling an iPhone 4s uptime on a single battery charge. Designed to serve as both an iPhone 4 bumper case and a mobile battery recharger at the same time, Andino claims that the PowerPlus II Lite mobile battery pack was created to cope with the "increasing demands of smartphone users" while offering additional protection for the iPhone 4 at the same time.

Both theAndino Denim Texas iPad 2 Leather Case and the PowerPlus II Lite battery pack are currently available for sale at the retail price of S$59and can be purchased at the following flagship stores:

Apple scheduled media event to unveil iPad 2 on 2nd March

According to a report by All Things Digital, Apple has scheduled a media event in the start of March where they are going to announce the upcoming iPad 2.

To those who intensely cares about this kind of stuff - which would be pretty much everyone in the tech ecosystem - Apple will hold its much-anticipated event on March 2, where the tech giant seems poised to unveil a new version of its hugely successful iPad.

As in, iPad 2! Or, as BoomTown is now officially nicknaming it: iPad Too!

The report goes on to say that the scheduled date is firm and that the event will take place in San Francisco.

Its not clear when Apple will begin sending out its famous invites for gathering, but I am guessing soon, in order to get the Apple faithful to the proper level of froth.

Reuters also posted a story and they are also hearing that Apple will introduce the next iPad on the same day.

Apple will host an event on March 2, where the company is expected to take the wraps off the newest iPad model, an individual with knowledge of the situation said. Apple declined to comment.

The New York Times also ran a similar story announcing that Apple will indeed introduce their flagship tablet on the second day of March.

Now people with knowledge of the matter say that Apple will host an event on Wednesday, March 2 to showcase its new iPad.

If true, Apple should be sending out media invites for the event in the following days.

Update: Engadget just posted on their site that theyve received the following media invite from Apple indeed scheduled on 2nd March. As you can see, they are very likely going to announce the next iPad from the teaser invite.

AMD Fusion to revolutionize tablet devices

In spite of not having a single processor that is suitable for powering most netbooks and tablets in the market today (save for the Athelon Neo), AMD is highly optimistic that its upcoming Fusion platform which is due for release in 2011 will be all it needs to turn the tides against ARM and Intel.

By integrating the GPU into a CPU to produce what AMD calls an accelerated processing unit or APU, AMD believes that its new breed of microprocessors had the potential to change the way tablets work and perform, especially where general-purpose usage tasks such as web surfing and video streaming are concerned.

Leslie Sobel, AMD's vice president of marketing, felt that Fusion's characteristics makes it well suited for such devices.

"Think about the advantages you get from a power performance and a form-factor perspective when you can take GPU and CPU and put them on the same die,” he said. “You get enormous power efficiencies which is going to enable, not only things like tablet and slate, but these great experiences when you use it."

Sobel also believes that the features which Apple has chosen to omit from its device, namely multi-tasking and Flash support, will end up being the very thing most consumers expect in a tablet device, saying that user experience has to go hand in hand with the tablet's form factor.

"People know what they want and web video is pretty much in the top three of every wish list...they might not think of it as web video – they certainly dont think of it as Flash - all they know it when they go to YouTube they want it to work," he said.

AMD 28nm GPU on-track for 2011

During the latest financial conference call AMD Interim CEO, Thomas Seifert, revealed that AMD was well on schedule to release the first 28nm GPUs in 2011 - "We have working silicon in-house and remain on-track to deliver the first members of what we expect will be another industry-leading GPU family to market later this year. We expect to be at the forefront of the GPU industrys transition to 28nm".

This is no surprise, of course, considering AMD have always been first to a new process technology, well ahead of NVIDIA. However, 40nm has been an exception, a trouble process lasting for well over 2 years thanks to the cancellation of 32nm and constant delays to 28nm. Some thought this would allow NVIDIA to catch up, but the latest rumours have suggested AMD releasing 28nm GPUs in 2011, with NVIDIA following up sometime in 2012.Seifert also confirms that 28nm GPUs will be fabricated at both TSMC and Globalfoundries. This would mean that certain GPUs will be handled by TSMC, while others more suited to Glofo will be assigned to them.Few details are known about AMDs next-gen 28nm GPUs, codenamed Southern Islands and rumoured to be branded Radeon HD 7000 series. With VLIW-4 still only used in HD 6900 series, GCN looming and VLIW-5 required to crossfire with AMDs A-Series, the Radeon HD 7000 could be a mix and match of architectures as well as fabricators.Source: Xbitlabs

AMD refreshes FirePro series at the entry level with V3900

AMDs FirePro family of graphics cards for the Professional/Workstation user has just seen a new addition today with the launch of the FirePro V3900 which replaces the V3800. AMD promises best-in-class workstation experiences at an entry level price point with this card - that being a US $119 MSRP at select online resellers.

Compared to the V3800, the V3900 gets double the memory at 1GB and uses a GPU derived from the 6800 family of Radeon cards, dubbed "TURKS". The cards 128-bit DDR3 memory arrangement gives it 28.8GB/s of memory bandwidth compared to the V3800 which had a 64-bit interface providing half the bandwidth at 14.4GB/s.

AMD has claimed through the means of several presentation slides that its V3900 outperforms both the Quadro 400 and V3800 in a wide range of tests. The V3800 sells at just $99, but for a mere $20 difference its expected that this price point is well validated in line of its performance increase.

AMD will ship the V3900 with both a full and half-height bracket to allow it to be installed in small form factor systems. The card will also be showing up in several systems from HP with ISV certification from Fujitsu-Siemens to follow in the spring.

ASUS prepares Mars II dual-GTX 480

Not content with the ARES dual-HD 5870, Asus is undertaking a projectwhich defies all logic and reason. As we know, the single GPU GTX 480 isright on the edge of PCI-e specifications. This doesn't bother Asus atall, as they seem to be making a dual GPU version of the GTX 480. We aretalking of a single graphics card with a power consumption of between500 and 600W!!! The power is supplied through 8+2 phase VRM per GPU,with three 8-pin PCI-e power connectors. That means a total of 525W issupplied to the graphics card, compared to the PCI-e spec maximum of300W.

The Mars II features a total of 3GB, as expected for a dual-GTX 480. The size of Mars II is truly massive - with the height being well over a standard PCI-e card.

An unprecedently hefty cooler must be required to cool 500+W of heat. Could we see the first quad-slot graphics card?

The GTX 480 SLI performs well against the Asus ARES, so we can expect Mars II to just edge out the likes of Asus ARES or Sapphire HD 5970 4GB TOXIC for the overall performance crown, assuming the Mars II does not require a slight downclock.

The Mars II (is just a temporary name) will no doubt be a limited edition card, and will probably sell at a price close to $1500. Perhaps Asus will produce quad-GPU card next, as dual-GF100 seems well on its way to be conquered.

Un nouveau God of War annoncé !
